Islamic unrest in Greeley
September 9th, 2008
There has been some ongoing drama in the last few days between JB Swift and over 150 Somalian Muslim refugees that the company has hired.’
The situation has to do with Muslim observance of Ramadan, a month where fasting is done from sunrise to sunset. The Swift workers want a break scheduled at sunset so they can break their fast and pray, Non-Muslim workers don’t think there should be special treatment, and the company is trying to find the right balance.
I would love to hear any thoughts you have on this situation…

i say make Christians work on Christmas, Easter and Sundays, make Jews work on Passover, Fridays, and Chanika, and make Muslims work on Ramadan. /sarcasm
Then Greeley could also have some Christian unrest, etc. As I recall, the Christian immigrants didn’t bother to conform to the religious views or traditions of the people who already lived here.
It would be extremely hypocritical if they then expected other later immigrants to conform to their own personal superstitions and customs.

You comparison doesn’t quite match up. Ramadan is a month, Christmas is a day. I haven’t seen any local businesses making concessions to Christians for Lent.
Ultimately the question becomes how much of a concession in the name of ‘religious freedom’ is really valid? Is there a monetary amount where businesses should cap what they are willing to indulge?
